Video of the month? :-)

Maybe for spring term I'll get back to weekly posts? And some more variety than the Suzuki repertoire!  (Hey, you can always go to my old blog and click on the "video of the week" tag for many more videos from past years! www.raspberrycello.blogspot.com)

This is a teaching video by Suzuki cello teacher, Abigail McHugh-Grifa, as preparation for playing O Come, Little Children.  This is the first piece we learn which begins with an up bow, and in addition to this, has double-ups!  It can be a real exercise in coordination for some students, so we separate learning the bowing from the fingerings. Please DON'T practice this with the bow until you KNOW the notes well  - you can sing it by memory, and can play it using pizzicato.  Once you can hum the tune, use these words to sing it:

Up long short short long short short long short short slow (stop)
Up long short short long short short long short short slow (stop)

Up long short short long short short long short short slow (stop)
Up long short short long short short long short short slow (stop)

When you can easily demonstrate for me this bowing in the air like Ms. McHugh-Grifa does here, then you can play it on open D string, and finally, will have more success in putting the bow together with the left hand notes!

Here is a performance of the piece with piano accompaniment which I also featured in December.
